Hi Elena, I’m trying to move sbi site straight to wp using the ip address method. But I’m stuck. Sorry for that, I think I’ll have more questions coming… here’s my condition:

I have an existing hostgator account with 3 websites. So, I add-on a domain with my sbi domain name without the www. For “subdomain/ftp username”, I tried to insert the same as my sbi domain (without .com), but it’s not accepted because it’s too long. So I shortened it.

Anyway, I proceed to install wp. Then I made the 2 database edits for my sbi domain by putting hostgator’s server ip and hostgator’s account username.

Now, I’m trying to log into wp. I typed http://hostgatorip/~username/mysbidomain.com/wp-admin Then I inserted my hostgator account username and the new password they emailed me for this sbi domain wp. But it said my password is wrong.

I’m very confuse now, ha. Please advise.

    Hi Lean,

no worries. It is almost ALWAYS something really simple.

    The issue is likely here:

    So I shortened it.

    Then you said:

Anyway, I proceed to install wp. Then I made the 2 database edits for my sbi domain by putting hostgator’s server ip and hostgator’s account username.

You said above you had to shorten your addon domain folder. This should be reflected in preview URL too. Let’s say your primary domain at hostgator is domain1.com and your SBI site that is currently at SBI is called mydomain2.com and you shortened it to “mydo” (instead of mydomain2.com) when creating addon domain and then installed WP on it. Your WordPress will be available at

    http://mydomain1.com/mydo

or if you already edited database for IP address it will be

    http://123.456.78/~username/mydo

Because you shortened the subdirectory name when creating an addon domain mydomain2.com will not work for preview.

Also this sounds like another issue:

Now, I’m trying to log into wp. I typed http://hostgatorip/~username/mysbidomain.com/wp-admin Then I inserted my hostgator account username and the new password they emailed me for this sbi domain wp. But it said my password is wrong.

You should use username and password you created when installing WordPress, NOT (!!!) username and password at Hostgator.

Summing up, here is your action plan:

    1. go back to database and make sure you choose database of THIS particular site and not databases of other sites you already have there.

    2. find where you edited URL and make sure it reflects your shortened version and not full mydomain2.com Correct if necessary and make sure you do that TWICE.

    3. Go to your correct preview URL (with the shortened version instead of full URL) and login with WordPress (NOT Hostgator) login, that includes WordPress username and WordPress password.

Let me know how it works.

    Hi Elena,

Thank you so much for your prompt reply 😉 I didn’t shorten the add-on domain, but the ftp username. Anyway, after reading your explanation, I found out I didn’t put the add-on domain in the database like:

    http://123.456.78/~username/mydomain.com

After changing that, I’m able to log in. So glad~ Thanks again!
